About

Temple of Heaven is located in the Dongcheng District of Beijing. It was originally called "Tian Di Tan" and was later renamed "Temple of Heaven". It served as an important site for the emperor to perform sacrifices to heaven and pray for a bountiful harvest during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The park covers an area of 273 hectares and is the largest existing ancient ritual complex in China. The park is divided into the inner court and the outer court. The northern part is circular and the southern part is square, symbolizing "heaven is round, earth is square." It mainly consists of the Qiyue Terrace, the Yuanqiu Terrace, the Zhai Palace, and the Shenyue Pavilion, among other ancient buildings. The Qinyuedian is a iconic building. The outer court also features a large number of ancient birch trees, making the scenery magnificent.
